It has now been five years since
the first Sacred Heart Youth Group meeting in the Upper
Room. Five years ago, at our first meeting, we had 10
people show up to see what we were about. The kids that
showed up found out that Youth Group was "not that bad",
and over time the group grew.
Nowadays the turn-out is typically
40 to 50 kids on a Sunday night, when we spend one hour
talking about our faith in a comfortable social
environment. A typical meeting consists of some general
announcements regarding past and future events, a short
game or competition (like the one shown at right) to get
everybody warmed up, and some singing. (Believe it or not,
most people enjoy this part.)
Then we launch into a discussion
about our Catholic Faith with an emphasis on "Why is
this important to me as a high school
student?"
At the time of this writing we have
only had two real meetings (and a bonfire) for the
2003-2004 school year, but we have already had spirited
conversations on relationships and trust — first in the
context of our relationship with our parents, and then
with God. Our meetings take place every two weeks on
Sunday night from 7:30 to 8:30P in the Upper Room, and we
are always welcoming new members and their friends
(Catholic or otherwise). If you want to know more about
our group, the best way to find out is by coming!
