The Ineffable
By JOAN RITTY
This prayer is too heavy for
words to carry;
it is too weak to climb the
Himalayas
or cross the great African
desert,
and it does not know how to
swim oceans,
because it is still a child
putting itself together.
It is not yet aware it has
touched God
nor has it felt His presence
surround its growing.
This prayer is already full of
feeling.
It believes and trusts, it has
hope.
This prayer is not for the
person praying:
its heaviness is love.
God understands the silent,
the weak, the unformed.
He will hear this mute prayer
and then all that seemed heavy
will be light.
Romans 8:26-27
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness;
for we do not know how to pray as we ought,
but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with
sighs too deep for words. And he who searches
the hearts of men knows what is the mind of
the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for
the saints according to the will of God.
