HeroesCamp 2002 thrills kids
From June 24 through June 28,
the parish grounds and buildings were transformed into a
kids' Bible adventure as HeroesCamp 2002 presented
stories, crafts and games to introduce children to the
Bible stories of the
prophet Elijah, King David and the giant Goliath, the
prophet Daniel (in the lion's den), Mary (at the wedding
feast of Cana), and the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. The
theme was "Running on God's Power," and these photos by
Pat Milo show how powerful the experience was.
The skits at HeroesCamp vacation Bible school are
always a big hit — but this year more than ever, according
to camp director Karla Bellinger. Now the Bible stories
are acted out in the newly renovated parish basement hall,
where a new stage sound system makes it possible to hear
ever word, as in this enactment of the conflict between
David and Goliath. There were about 320 campers this June,
and 110 junior counselors.
An imposing giant!
For the role of Goliath, HeroesCamp was fortunate to
enlist the services of Sacred Heart Parish’s own Bobby
Jones, a former Penn State football star who has been
drafted to play with the Pittsburgh Steelers beginning
this Fall. He towered over Jimmy Davies, who played the
young David.
